Liverpool’s post-Klopp era is taking shape under Arne Slot, and one of the biggest talking points in the Anfield Index podcast featuring Dave Davis and Dr Phil Barts has been the club’s next major signing in attack. The debate revolves around the potential departure of Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz, which could pave the way for a new versatile forward.
One name that stood out in their analysis is Matheus Cunha, currently at Wolves. Davis and Barts ran the numbers, considering his versatility, attacking output, and pressing ability, and a strong case emerged for why Liverpool should seriously consider him.
Dr Phil Barts was particularly enthusiastic about Cunha’s ability to play multiple roles across the frontline. “He’s got serious minutes on the wing with Atletico and Red Bull as well, played the 10, so versatility comes into it,” he pointed out. This adaptability could be crucial for Slot’s tactical flexibility.
At Liverpool, the lack of high-intensity, multi-positional attackers has been evident. With Díaz struggling for form and injuries affecting squad rotation, Cunha’s ability to switch between roles seamlessly could be a major boost.
Liverpool’s best attacking sides have thrived on speed and pressing, something Barts highlighted as a key trait of Cunha. “That would give us a definite attacking output at pace… nearly 34kph top speed is an exceptional speed,” he noted.
Davis chimed in on Cunha’s work rate off the ball, comparing him to a familiar figure in Liverpool’s past. “Is there an argument that Cunha is almost the closest to Bobby that we’ve seen or profiled so far on the show?” The suggestion that Cunha could replicate aspects of Roberto Firmino’s false nine role is intriguing, particularly in a system that demands intelligent movement and selfless pressing.

One of the most critical points made in the discussion was around Cunha’s value compared to alternatives like Alexander Isak. Barts was clear in his assessment:
“We know Cunha has a set fee of £62 million in his release clause. It’s not a small amount, but in terms of wanting someone to play as your nine or forward in the Premier League, it’s not massive money either.”
Compared to Newcastle’s Isak, who could cost over £100 million, Cunha presents a financially smarter deal while still offering high-level output. His record of 13 goals and 4 assists this season makes him a direct contributor to 17 goal involvements—numbers that suggest he can add much-needed firepower to Liverpool’s attack.
The Anfield Index podcast made it clear that Liverpool must decide what type of attacker they prioritise. As Barts summarised:
“It might be a case of what output you want – the creativity or the goal element.”
If Liverpool wants a Firmino-style false nine, Cunha fits. If they’re after a pure goal-getter, Isak may be the better fit. But considering price, versatility, and playing style, Cunha may offer the best balance of all three.
With Liverpool set for a tactical evolution under Slot, Matheus Cunha offers a cost-effective, high-intensity forward option that aligns with the club’s philosophy. His ability to play across the front line, drop into midfield when needed, and press with intensity makes him an ideal candidate to replace Darwin Núñez.
At £62 million, this could be one of the most intelligent moves Liverpool makes this summer. As Dr Phil Barts put it:
“For that price, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more likable player.”
