The road to Champions League glory continues for Liverpool as they await confirmation of their last-16 opponents. After an impressive group-stage campaign, the Reds topped the new league phase format, securing direct passage to the knockout rounds. But while they avoided an extra play-off tie, the next challenge could be far from straightforward.
Liverpool dominated the early stages of the Champions League, finishing at the summit of the table despite a minor setback in their final match against PSV Eindhoven. Under the competition’s revamped structure, the top eight sides progressed directly to the last 16, while those ranked ninth to 24th had to battle it out in a play-off round for the remaining knockout slots.
That means Liverpool’s opponent will be one of the lowest-ranked sides to qualify from the play-offs. However, finishing top doesn’t guarantee an easy draw.

The Reds will face the winners of the play-off ties between the 15th and 16th seeds or the 17th and 18th seeds. That shortlist includes Paris Saint-Germain, Brest, or Benfica—none of whom can be underestimated.
With the second legs of the play-offs taking place on February 18 and 19, the picture will become clearer soon. PSG are in a commanding position after a 3-0 first-leg win over Brest, while Benfica hold a narrow 1-0 lead against Monaco.
Liverpool will discover their official last-16 opponents during the Champions League draw on Friday, February 21. The first leg is set for either March 4 or 5, with the return fixture taking place the following week.
No matter who they face, Liverpool will need to be at their best to continue their pursuit of European success.
