Liverpool are being linked with a move to bring former Manchester United defender Álvaro Carreras back to the Premier League.

Carreras, who was known as Alvaro Fernandez during his time in English football, has caught the eye since leaving Manchester United for Benfica. The 21-year-old signed on an initial loan deal that was made permanent for a fee of €6m in the summer.

His performances have attracted attention from Europe’s top clubs with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Juventus all linked, while Spanish outlet AS have claimed Liverpool are also in the race. The Reds reportedly view Carreras as a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson, who will turn 31 in March.

Carreras has helped Benfica to a perfect start in the Champions League with two wins from two games, including a 4-0 thrashing of Atletico Madrid in Lisbon.

Manchester United have been criticised for their decision to let the Spain u-21 leave with the Red Devils having started the season without a recognised left-back. Ongoing injury issues have left Erik ten Hag short at left-back as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have endured extended absences.

Manchester United have buyback option for Benfica defender

United, however, could still benefit from Carreras’ performances in Portugal. Club officials have claimed there is a “high” sell-on clause involved, alongside a buyback option for a fee similar to the initial one received from Benfica.
