Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones revealed the details of a text message he received from his former manager Jurgen Klopp after racking up 100 Premier League appearances for his boyhood club.

The academy graduate brought up his century of outings in a 3-1 victory over Leicester City on Boxing Day, marking the milestone with a goal. Jones has been in fine form this season, flourishing in the more controlled version of football introduced by Arne Slot while embracing his newfound fatherhood.

After netting the tenth league goal of his blossoming Liverpool career, Jones revealed that the manager who gave him his Premier League debut was the first to offer his best wishes post-match. "I came in then and normally text family and I saw a text off Klopp saying, 'Congratulations on 100 games and here's to 500'," the 23-year-old midfielder told BBC's Match of the Day.

"I was like, 'What is he on about?' I just checked then and I am proud. It was him who set up the team we have now. The foundation was there and Arne Slot has carried it on."

Jones boasts seven Premier League assists alongside his double digit goal tally - coming close to the figures put forward by Liverpool's greatest academy graduate, Steven Gerrard, during his first century of league appearances.

The recent England international caused a whisper of controversy during preseason when he revealed that Slot's possession-based approach was "more me" than Klopp's style, which Jones described as "a bit too direct, up and down, up and down".

The boyhood Liverpool fan quickly clarified his comments and Klopp clearly bears his former player no ill-will. Even if Jones does achieve the optimistic tally of 500 Premier League outings set by his former German manager, he would still trail Gerrard (504) and Jamie Carragher (508) in the club's list of record appearance makers. However, unlike that legendary duo, Jones has won the Premier League title.
