Olympique Lyonnais’s worrying financial situation has now reached the higher echelons of Europe’s football governance. According to L’Équipe, UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) is in the process of negotiating the terms of an agreement with OL following a damning financial outlook. The deal would include a fine likely exceeding €10 million, along with strict measures such as a wage bill cap and transfer supervision, all tied to a roadmap toward financial recovery. If OL refuse to sign up to the measures, they face the very real risk of being banned from UEFA club competitions, with an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) their only recourse. The club’s American owner John Textor, joined by Eagle Football Group’s head of global football Michael Gerlinger, was in Nyon on Wednesday to discuss the situation directly with UEFA officials—just hours before attending PSG’s Champions League semi-final win over Arsenal.Domestically, the DNCG has already provisionally relegated OL to Ligue 2 at the end of the current season unless the club can rectify its financial position. Back in December, UEFA had already provisionally barred OL from the Europa League after their 2024 financial statements failed to meet the “going concern” standard. That sanction was later lifted when the accounts were narrowly approved by the club’s auditors, but UEFA warned that OL would remain under “close monitoring” moving forward.GFFN | George Boxall
