Man United are moving closer to completing the transfer signing of Diego León, with the young left-back en route to England for his medical.
The 17-year-old Paraguayan revealed that he is on his way to Manchester to complete his move from Cerro Porteño, where he will return until the summer once the deal is finalised.
“I’m very happy, very happy indeed,” León told Rock&Pop Paraguay. “I’ve left the deal all up to my manager. I just focus on the day to day so I can give my best. I’ll be back on Tuesday.”
Asked if he is to have a medical check-up and sign a pre-contract, Leon responded: “Yes, yes, the medical check-up.”
The Paraguay U20 international also revealed that he spoke with compatriot and former Wigan and Everton midfielder Antolin Alcaraz about playing in the Premier League.
“I’ve already started studying English,” he said. “I’ve spoken to Antolin Alcaraz about what it’s like in England.”
Renato Bittar, Leon’s representative, added: “We’re going to Manchester for the medical and to sign the contract. The idea is that he will be present for the club next season.”
South American football expert Tim Vickery told Sky Sports News what Man United can expect from their latest signing.
“This is an indication of how quickly the market can go for South American talent,” he said. “He made his debut in August; by October he’s already being linked with major Premier League clubs. First it was Arsenal and subsequently Manchester United.
“He’s a strapping lad playing at left-back, shows defensive skills, although he scored one of the all-time great own goals when he lobbed his goalkeeper from 40 yards, accidents can happen. But he looks like a solid all-rounder; he can go outside and attack, he can attack the space inside the penalty area, he can defend as well.
“Quite where he fits into the scheme Manchester United are playing at the moment, I don’t know. He’s got a few more months yet to establish an identity as a player, so one for the future.”
