Manchester United have “registered interest” in Gianluigi Donnarumma but face a battle to win the red-hot race amongst Europe’s elite for the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper, according to a report.

Donnarumma, 26, has emerged as one of the standout shot stoppers in world football since his move to Paris in 2021 from AC Milan.

The Italian international capped off an imperious campaign last night as he helped PSG trounce Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final in Munich, completing an historic treble for the French powerhouse.

Luis Enrique’s side triumphed in Ligue 1 at a canter, losing only two matches while scoring the most goals and conceding the fewest. They then beat Reims 3-0 in the Coup de France last month, meaning the win over Inter made it three from three for the best side in Europe this season.

Donnarumma was rarely troubled in last night’s blow out. But he was absolutely pivotal to PSG’s journey to Munich, making game-changing saves in each previous round as the Parisians dumped out Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal en route to the final.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper is already a notorious figure in English football after his penalty-saving heroics in the final of Euro 2020 helped Italy defeat the Three Lions at Wembley. Fans at Anfield, Villa Park and the Emirates will most likely never want to see the man mountain in goal ever again.

But they could be forced to as the Manchester clubs – United and City – are both set to “line up moves” for Donnarumma as the Italian’s contract situation at the Parc de Princes offers suitors a window of opportunity to perform a stunning raid.

Caught Offside reveals “Gianluigi Donnarumma’s future at Paris Saint-Germain is under increasing scrutiny, with some of Europe’s top clubs preparing to pounce amid uncertainty over the Italian goalkeeper’s contract extension.”

The goalkeeper’s contract is set to expire next summer (2026) and “negotiations over an extension have reached a standstill.”

The report details Donnarumma is demanding a “new salary worth €10 million per year” which PSG are “reluctant” to meet, instead offering a proposal worth €6 million annually.

This stand off has led to some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including the Manchester neighbours and Serie A giants Juventus and Inter Milan, making advances to sign the Italian.

“Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester United, and Manchester City have all registered interest as PSG hesitates to meet Donnarumma’s wage demands, according to Caught Offside sources.”

“Manchester United are also keeping tabs on the situation. The Red Devils are evaluating goalkeeping alternatives as manager Ruben Amorim remains unconvinced by current No.1, Andre Onana. Donnarumma is seen as a high-calibre solution capable of immediately strengthening United’s defensive stability.

“Meanwhile, across Manchester, City have also shown interest but would need to offload Ederson before making a move.”

But the report reveals “Italian heavyweights Juventus and Inter Milan are understood to be the most serious contenders for Donnarumma’s signature” opening the door to a dramatic return to Serie A in an enemy shirt for the AC Milan academy graduate.

United will need to put their money where their mouth is to convince Donnarumma to join Amorim’s revolution at Old Trafford ahead of clubs who can offer the Italian international a chance to reclaim the Champions League trophy he has just lifted for PSG.
