As Pep Guardiola continues to weigh up his own options surrounding his future at Manchester City, one potential candidate to replace him has issued an update.

A number of names have been linked with becoming the next head coach to oversee a new era at the Etihad Stadium, with Pep Guardiola firmly into the final months of his existing contract at Manchester City.

Having last extended his agreement by two years midway through the club’s historic treble-winning season of 2022/23, Guardiola will now see his deal expire at the end of the ongoing campaign, leaving Manchester City officials with forward-planning to do.

Among the names to have been reportedly considered and monitored by Manchester City to date are Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso following the Spaniard’s huge success with the Bundesliga club last campaign in particular.

However, the appointment of Sporting’s Hugo Viana as Manchester City’s next Director of Football to succeed Txiki Begiristain from 2025 has naturally led to links to the club’s manager too, who has commented on his future this week.

Speaking during a press conference this week, Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim revealed that a contract renewal is on the table for him at the Portuguese giants, should he wish to further extend his stay with the club.

“The president (Frederico Varandas) is there and the truth is that I have always said that I have the (contract) renewal on the table, in that aspect we have been talking for a long time,” Amorim revealed.

He continued, Regarding the future, I will not comment.”

A recent report claimed that the 39-year-old is currently not only on Manchester City’s list as a potential replacement for Pep Guardiola, but is also of particular interest at Manchester United, who have made specific enquiries about him and his situation.

The Old Trafford club continue to see external pressure placed on Erik ten Hag, with inconsistent results for Manchester United failing to indicate a clear pathway back to former glories under the Dutchman.
