Bayern Munich moved swiftly at the start of January to make a decision regarding the immediate future of Mathys Tel. The French forward held talks with Vincent Kompany and eventually came to the conclusion that he would stay in Munich instead of going out on loan for the second half of the season. Bayern have fielded interest from several clubs for signing Tel on a short-term loan deal.

Despite getting clarity regarding Tel’s future, the last two days have seen significant new developments. Chelsea have shown concrete interest in signing Tel, while Bayern are interested in signing Christopher Nkunku from the Premier League side.

The London-based club has set a big price tag on Nkunku, but Bayern have not opened the door to Tel’s exit. According to Sky Sports journalist Kerry Hau, Tel remains keen on staying in Munich and wants to fight for game time during the second half of the season.

A move away from Bayern will only take place for Tel if the club decides to cash in and tells him that he doesn’t feature in their long-term plans. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund told the media on Tuesday that Tel remains a player that Die Roten want to keep.

Tel has a chance of getting adequate game time at Bayern

The first half of the season didn’t go as planned for Tel after enjoying a breakout last season. Tel is yet to score or assist for Bayern this campaign. However, his fortunes may change in the second half of the season.

The left flank has been a cause for concern at Bayern. Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, and Leroy Sane have been inconsistent this season. Kompany’s patience with these players may eventually run out, presenting Tel more opportunities on the left flank.

Nkunku deal may skew Bayern’s budget for the summer

Despite enduring a challenging spell at Chelsea, there is no doubt about Nkunku succeeding in Bavaria. He shone in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig before sealing a move to Stamford Bridget in 2023. Nkunku will add quality to Bayern’s squad, but it will come at the expense of skewing the transfer budget for the summer.

The Bavarian club doesn’t have an endless transfer budget every summer. Since the top target for the summer is Florian Wirtz, Die Roten have to be a little cautious about spending big in January. Moreover. Chelsea’s valuation of the player is wide off the mark, considering his performances over the last two years.

It would be a smarter move from Bayern to not sign an expensive player in January and assess the situation in the summer. Sticking with Tel is the right move, considering how much time and money Bayern have invested in him over the last two years.
