Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel rejected the chance to join Tottenham Hotspur on Friday, rendering chairman Daniel Levy's journey to Germany essentially pointless.
It's a bitter pill for Spurs, who are in the midst of a crippling injury crisis, to take, and adds further strain to manager Ange Postecoglou as he looks to reverse an alarming run of defeats that has plummeted the club to 15th in the Premier League table.
Information at the time suggested Tel's rejection of a permanent move to north London did not indicate a change of heart from the Frenchman, who had been tipped to stay in Bavaria early on in the month before an apparent U-turn in the pursuit of playing first-team football.
However, The Athletic suggest that Tel's decision does factor in that he may be considering waiting until the summer before deciding his next step, rather than rushing into a decision before the January transfer window slams shut.
It's potentially bad news for Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa, who have also expressed an interest in signing Tel this month. The trio have been leaning towards a loan deal with an option to buy, rather than the outright permanent route that Spurs opted to take in negotiations, and although no decision has officially been made by Tel, it's looking increasingly likely that he'll stay put.

United may need a new option on the left, should Alejandro Garnacho leave before the end of the month - Tottenham have incidentally turned their attention his way - while Chelsea are looking for an additional source of goals to help out Cole Palmer. Villa, meanwhile, have sold Jhon Duran to Al Nassr and are considering Tel, Joao Felix and Marcus Rashford as they look to provide Unai Emery with another body.
Tel has started just nine Bundesliga games for Bayern since arriving from Rennes in 2022, but has shown flashes of brilliance from the bench to propel himself onto the radar of scouts from around the continent.
He has made 14 appearances for Bayern in all competitions this season, primarily from the bench, but has started to consider his future at the club as Vincent Kompany continues to prefer the likes of Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry in wide areas.
Harry Kane is also standing in the way of more minutes as a central striker, though Tel's best position is arguably on the left, where he can drive at full-backs by darting down the line or cutting inside onto his preferred right foot.
