Memphis Depay has helped cause a rule change in Brazil with a remarkable move. The Dutch international stepped on the ball in the final of the São Paulo state championship between his club Corinthians and Palmeiras, causing a brawl.

Depay’s skill move, known in Brazil as a paradinha, has now been banned by the Brazilian Football Federation. Players who do it will now be punished with a yellow card.

Two yellow cards have already been issued for doing this move. These both came for two youth players who did this in a match between Brazil and Bolivia at the South American U17 Championship.

On Sunday, Depay took to social media to express his frustration towards the decision. “The joy and passion we express on the pitch should not be limited. Let’s focus on rules that improve the sport and look at the business side of football, instead of these silly announcements.”

Depay was supported in his dissatisfaction by Brazilian favourite and all-time top scorer, Neymar. “Football is getting more and more boring,” he responded on Instagram.

It has been known for some time that Depay and Neymar get along well. The star advised the Dutchman to come and play football in Brazil, as became clear during Depay’s presentation. When they met in a league match in February, the two chatted for a long time afterwards, exchanging shirts and hugs.
