Napoli are edging ever closer to an agreement for goalkeeper Alex Meret’s new contract, which should split the difference between his wage demand and the offer on the table.

The situation could’ve been extremely delicate, as his current deal only runs to the end of the season, so in theory he could already be negotiating with other clubs to join them as a free agent, including Arsenal.

However, the shot-stopper and agent Federico Pastorello have been adamant their focus is on agreeing an extension at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Meret, who turns 28 next month, had wanted a longer contract to June 2028 worth circa €3m per season.

According to Il Mattino newspaper, they are expected to shake hands with a compromise between the two positions.

It is going to be a contract to June 2027 with option to extend for one more year, which is unilaterally under the control of the club.

His salary is also set to be boosted from the current €2m to almost €2.5m per season with the introduction of various performance-related bonuses.

Meret is a product of the Udinese youth academy and first came to Napoli on loan in 2018, with an obligation to buy for €26m plus add-ons that was activated a year later.

He is due to celebrate his 200th competitive appearance for the club this weekend, having won the Serie A title, Coppa Italia and been part of the Italy squad that lifted the EURO 2020 trophy.
