Mo Salah will greatly strengthen his case for the 2025 men’s Ballon d’Or if Liverpool win a major trophy this season, according to manager Arne Slot.
The Egyptian winger has never won the prestigious award in his career, coming closest in 2019 and 2022 when he finished fifth in the voting on both occasions.
The 32-year-old, who didn’t make the shortlist for last year’s honour, is the favourite to claim the golden ball in October having registered an astonishing 51 goal involvements in all competitions so far this season.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League encounter with Newcastle United, Slot pointed out that the Ballon d’Or winner is usually part of a team that has won major silverware. Liverpool look set to finish top of the league in England and are still in the Uefa Champions League.
Slot on Salah contract: ‘Mo is outstanding – I hope he stays at Liverpool’
The Dutchman said “It’s mostly about the tekkers, isn’t it? It’s a good thing that Mo is in the discussion because it means he is doing well and we are doing well but for him to stay in that discussion he should bring in the same performances as he’s done for seven or eight months now.
“I think in general someone who wins the Ballon d’Or needs to win something as well so it’s a great challenge that is in front of us and in front of him.
“What I like is that he takes this challenge by not only scoring a big goal and a great assist against Man City but he also wanted the team to win because his defensive work rate, especially in the second half was outstanding.
“I think that is what it takes for us to have a chance of winning something and if we as a team can win something, he will have a far better chance to win the Ballon d’Or.”
