What a strong message going out from Newcastle United to these would-be signings.

No secret that Eddie Howe and the club are looking to try and compete with those who have significantly more financial muscle in the transfer market.

As things stand, the usual suspects having far more expensive squads, plus much bigger wage bills.

Newcastle United trying to compete by targeting young players.

Especially the best young… English talent.

Eddie Howe has played a blinder in this respect, when it comes to saying to the top young players who qualify for England.

Come to St James’ Park and this can/will happen.

Anthony Gordon

Signed as a 21 year old on 28 January 2023, United paid £40m (plus £5m in future add-ons) for the raw young winger who had made only 42 Premier League career starts for Everton.

March 2024 gets his first England call up and on 23 March 2024 makes his debut against Brazil.

That was less than 14 months after Anthony Gordon had signed for Newcastle United AND after only 30 Premier League starts for NUFC.

Lewis Hall

Signed as an 18 year old on 21 August 2023, United initially signing him on loan, but with a commitment to pay £28m at the end of June 2024 to make it a permanent deal. At that point, the left-back had only made eight Premier League starts in his career, for Chelsea.

November 2024 gets his first senior England call and on 14 November 2024 makes his debut against Greece.

That was less than 15 months after Lewis Hall had signed for Newcastle United on loan (less than five months after completing his permanent deal) AND after only 16 Premier League starts for NUFC.

Tino Livramento

Signed as a 20 year old on 7 August 2023, United paid £32m (plus a reported £6m in future add-ons) for the young right-back who had made only 25 Premier League career starts for Southampton.

September 2024 gets his first senior England call and on 17 November 2024 makes his debut against the Republic of Ireland.

That full England debut only 15 months after Tino Livramento had signed for Newcastle United AND after only 20 Premier League starts for NUFC.

The message is clear

Eddie Howe has done an incredible job, an England production line in full swing.

In all three of these cases, Eddie Howe has looked after the longer-term best interests of all three young players AND Newcastle United (AND England…) by carefully nurturing them. Refusing to be pressured by some clueless Newcastle United fans who think they know best, demanding that these 18, 20, 21 year olds are thrown straight in at the deep end.

Just like he has done with more senior and experienced players such as Bruno Guimaraes, Eddie Howe ensuring that these young England hopefuls have been in the best possible place, before asking them to contribute significantly to the first team.

The net product of that educated and switched on approach is there for all to see.
