Viktor Gyokeres is yet to give Manchester United ‘the green light’ over a transfer to the club despite strong interest from Old Trafford.
Manchester United are prioritising a centre-forward this summer with Ruben Amorim keen on a reunion with Gyokeres.
The Swedish striker has been sensational since signing for Sporting Lisbon, where he has scored 95 goals in just 98 appearances across all competitions. Gyokeres scored four times during the club’s 5-0 win over Boavista last weekend to move to 52 goals for the season. He is the current leader in the race for the European Golden Shoe.
Former Sporting boss Amorim was involved in the deal to sign Gyokeres from Coventry City and is very interested in a reunion with the 26-year-old. Concrete talks have taken place between Manchester United and Sporting, though the forward is assessing all of his options.
Arsenal are also understood to be suitors, while there has been interest expressed from almost all of Europe’s top teams.
Manchester United’s pursuit of the player could hinge on the club’s ability to secure Champions League qualification. The Red Devils must win the Europa League to secure a place in the competition and face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals this week.
Gyokeres has a release clause of €100m (£85m) in his contract at Sporting but the Portuguese champions are prepared to let him leave for less. A figure between €60m and €70m will be enough to sign the striker.
United have placed Gyokeres near the top of a shortlist of options to improve the club’s firepower. Negotiations are ongoing to sign Wolves midfielder Matheus Cunha, who has a release clause of £62.5m. There is also interest in Ipswich Town forward Liam Delap.
