Mystery surrounding Celtic’s signing

The Englishman signed for the Hoops from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2021. A move to Glasgow had been sanctioned by Celtic’s hierarchy three months prior in March of that year. Despite the managerial job being vacant and Ange Postecoglou not arriving until June of 2021, the mystery surrounding who it was that signed off on the deal remains a question unanswered.

Putting pen to paper alongside his fellow Hillsborough teammate Osaze Urhoghide, both failed to make any real impression at the club.

For Shaw, an ineffectual loan spell at Fir Park in 2022 was followed by two seasons on loan in the English third tier with Morecambe and then most recently, Wigan Athletic. That was enough for Brendan Rodgers to wave goodbye to the former Owls prodigy this summer.

Charlie Adam signed Liam Shaw

A permanent move to Fleetwood Town who languish in EFL League 2 managed by Charlie Adam may give Shaw some much-needed stability in his career.

Despite only playing twice for the Hoops, Shaw, speaking to the official Fleetwood Town website, said that he does not have any regrets about his three-year spell at Celtic. “I got the phone call from my agent that Celtic were interested. It was a no brainer. A great experience. The standard of training has improved me. It was a pinch me moment (debut against Real Betis). When I started to play I was like, I’m here now, let’s do it. I thought I did well and we won the game. It’s an experience I’ll hold for the rest of my life.”

“I don’t think you can live with regrets”

“I don’t think you can live with regrets. It was the right move for me at the time going to Celtic and it was honestly a privilege to be a part of it all. I’ve learned a lot obviously, training with those sorts of players. I’ve picked up a lot of stuff up from them to put into my game.”

After three loan spells in three seasons, Shaw acknowledges that it is time to settle in a new permanent home, “I’m getting on a bit now being 23, but in football terms that is and now I just need to get my head down, play games and get my name back out there. I did play last season, but I feel great and ready to get a full season under my belt.”
