Real Madrid starlet Raul Asencio earned his maiden call-up to the Spanish national team this month after enjoying a breakthrough season at the Santiago Bernabeu.
One of the standout young centre-backs in La Liga this season, the 22-year-old was rewarded for his top performances for Los Blancos with Luis de la Fuente naming him in the squad for La Roja’s UEFA Nations League quarter-finals against the Netherlands.
As Spain get set to take on Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands outfit in Rotterdam later tonight, Asencio will not be involved.
Indeed, the Real Madrid academy product has been left out of the 23-man squad for the game by De la Fuente, along with Villarreal’s Yeremy Pino and Barcelona’s Ferran Torres, who misses out due to a knock.
Spain released the list of players called up for the game along with their shirt numbers for tonight’s game and Asencio’s name was omitted.
What is interesting is that De la Fuente has included Dean Huijsen, who was not even a part of the initial call-up and was brought in as a replacement for Inigo Martinez, in the squad for tonight’s game but left out Asencio.
As such, the Real Madrid starlet will now have to wait for his debut for the Spanish national team.
Whether it happens later this week when La Roja face the Dutch once again in the second leg of their quarter-final tie at Mestalla in Valencia remains to be seen.
