Over the years, a certain FC Barcelona icon has become synonymous with the Ballon d’Or itself. An award that is given to the best football player of the year in any given year, and it is regarded as the most prestigious individual award in the sport. That Barcelona player was none other than Lionel Messi, who has won the award a record eight times during his career.
However, with Messi no longer at the club, Barça needed a new face to emerge as Ballon d’Or-worthy. After all, the Catalan giants have always sought to feature the best players in the world, and what better way for a player to prove they belong in that conversation than by winning the Ballon d’Or?
In this new generation of talents at the Catalan club, many players would surely be dreaming of winning that award for themselves at some point. However, perhaps unanimously, many fingers point towards a certain 17-year-old Lamine Yamal being the heavy favorite if there is to be a winner that comes from Barcelona at some point.
Even in the opinion of his fellow 17-year-old teammate at Barcelona, Pau Cubarsi, Yamal has all the tools that are needed to succeed towards this particular objective and the young defender thinks the winger will end up making it his own, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo:
“Now everyone sees what he’s capable of, but I’ve known him for years and believe he has the ability to win it. I think he has no limits; he’s at a spectacular level, you never know what he’ll do next, and he goes forward with great confidence.”
In rather poetic fashion, this means that both Barcelona youngsters have now predicted that they will each end up winning a certain major individual award sooner or later. Previously, Lamine Yamal also gave his prediction that Cubarsi would end up becoming the next winner of the Kopa Trophy.
This time around, Lamine Yamal ended up winning the award while the center-back was one of the final nominees for it. However, rather than feeling hard done by the fact that someone else ended up winning it over him, Cubarsi was more than happy to see Yamal lift up the prestigious individual award.
