AC Milan must soon make a decision on the future of Mike Maignan, with various clubs abroad taking note of his situation.
As Quotidiano Sportivo recall this morning, Maignan has gone from having the label of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s heir, to getting the captain’s armband at Milan. He has had errors like the one in the Champions League against Feyenoord, but magic like the save against Genoa on Monday.
Patrick Vieira called him ‘the best on the pitch’ after the game. Now, however, the issue of Maignan’s future has once again come to the fore, given that his deal expires in just over 12 months meaning a natural crossroads has emerged.
Back in June, Zlatan Ibrahimovic had been clear: “He’s staying, everything is under control.” It is a that was concept reiterated later. A few months ago, the Swede used phrases such as ‘we’re talking, he’s happy and important’.
More recently, Geoffrey Moncada stated: “We’ve been talking for a long time and every day, there are no problems.” In the meantime, time passes and the announcement has not arrived. Moncada himself was very clear: “We cannot afford to lose players for free.”
Having arrived from Lille for €15m, Maignan is in his fourth season with the Rossoneri. In the first two years he was out for a month and a half (wrist surgery), then another four and a half months (soleus injury).
Did this bring doubts? No: he was named best goalkeeper in Serie A for 2021-22, in the team of the year for the AIC in 2022 and 2023, also awarded in 2024 this time as best goalkeeper of the European Championships in Germany.

Last December a verbal agreement for his renewal was secured: an extension until 2029, salary of around €5m. Then silence fell, with the latest rumours suggested that Milan reflected and actually revised their offer downwards.
Maignan himself was asked about his future one month ago: “I feel good, I do everything for this shirt, every day. I don’t know if… I know, but I don’t want to talk about my contract right now.”
In the summer he was monitored by Bayern Munich and PSG, while Premier League sides are watching him with interest, Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa above all.
Milan are keeping an eye on a series of profiles from Lucas Chevalier (Lille) to Bart Verbruggen (Brighton), as well as Marco Carnesecchi (Atalanta) and Elia Caprile (Napoli, on loan at Cagliari) domestically.
The feeling is that the announcement of the agreement between Milan and Maignan will arrive. But the final step is needed. In the meantime, the goalkeeper is targeting the Coppa Italia final next Wednesday.
