Real Madrid’s defeat to Valencia last night was not one many saw coming, especially given how Los Che have been struggling in La Liga this season.

Yet, Los Blancos faltered at home and dropped three key points in the title race and did not capitalise on a night when Barcelona also dropped points against Real Betis.

A lot has been said about Real Madrid’s poor form this season and their inability to play with any form of dominance. The pressure on Carlo Ancelotti is only mounting as the days pass.

Mistake accepted

As relayed in a recent update by Defensa Central, Carlo Ancelotti, and Davide Ancelotti conversed after the game about a decision in the starting lineup that potentially cost the team the game.

Indeed, it was the decision to bench Raul Asencio and play Aurelien Tchouameni as a centre-back which got the manager rethinking his decision. In fact, the decision did not go down well with fans either with many questioning the rationale.

“Maybe we were wrong, Raúl should have played,” the duo reportedly said after the game.

After all, Asencio has established himself as one of Real Madrid’s most reliable defenders this season and has formed a fine partnership with Antonio Rudiger.

His calmness and decision making has helped fill the void left by Eder Militao’s injury and the result last night was largely because of the lack of defensive stability on the night – something directly connected to Asencio’s benching.

The youngster’s absence saw Real Madrid leave open space behind the defense and it is clear that he must return to the dynamics against Arsenal midweek. With everything riding on the game at the Emirates stadium, Rudiger and Asencio will be the starters.
