Real Madrid are reportedly not pursuing a deal to sign Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, according to Marca.
The Dutchman, whose contract expires this summer, has been linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
However, Los Blancos are happy with their defensive options and won’t try to sign Van Dijk on a free transfer this summer.
Injuries have depleted Madrid’s rearguard, with David Alaba and Eder Militao missing a chunk of the season.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti had to use midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni in the backline to make up the numbers. He also promoted Raul Asencio to bolster the defence.
Madrid were offered Van Dijk but are wary of being used by players entering the final year of their contract.
They thought they were close to snapping up Alphonso Davies before he signed a new deal at Bayern Munich, and Madrid are wary of the same situation with Van Dijk.
The former Southampton star reiterated that he wants to stay on Merseyside but has refused to sign the new contract offered by Liverpool.
All signs point to him walking for free in June if he doesn’t get a bigger offer from the hierarchy.
Van Dijk has been the best defender in the Premier League this term, but Liverpool are seemingly reluctant to meet his demands.
