Young striker Ethan Wheatley has signed a new deal with Manchester United, extending his stay at the club until 2028 (via the club’s official website).
Wheatley joined United as a nine-year-old and has progressed through the youth ranks to feature for the first team.
He became the 250th academy graduate to feature for the first team when he came on as a substitute in the 4-2 win over Sheffield United at Old Trafford.
After being an unused substitute in the 7-0 thrashing of League One side Barnsley in the League Cup third round, he featured in the next round against Leicester City last October.
The 19-year-old played a pivotal role as the U18s won three trophies last season, scoring a goal in the national final against Chelsea and twice in the Premier League Cup final against Manchester City.
The England youth international made his debut for the U21s last season and was very impressive, scoring four goals in nine league games.
Wheatley continued his impressive form for Travis Binnion’s side in the first half of the season, scoring six goals in nine league games, including a hat-trick in the eight-goal thriller against Norwich City.
Due to a lack of game time with the first team, he was loaned to League Two promotion-chasers Walsall in January.
He has made just three appearances for Walsall and has not been in the matchday squad for the past seven league games.
Wheatley will have the chance to impress manager Ruben Amorim during pre-season for next term but will likely get another loan term elsewhere rather than stay with the first team.
