When Xavi Hernandez took over as the head coach of FC Barcelona back in 2021, one of the first operations that he carried out in the transfer market was the signature of Spanish attacker Ferran Torres from Manchester City.

Ferran was recovering from a long injury lay-off when Barcelona signed him but that did not stop the Catalan club from agreeing to a €55m plus €10m add-ons deal to bring the player from the Etihad stadium to Camp Nou.

Ferram was a revelation in the initial months under Xavi, making the left-wing position his own and constantly chipping in with goals and assists. However, over the course of the last few seasons, his performances have left a lot to be desired.

In Barcelona’s recent game against Alaves, Ferran who has had a difficult start to the new season, suffered an injury that saw him hooked off just five minutes into the game. He is now set to be out of action for the next 7-8 weeks.

While his transfer until now has not worked out as expected, a report from SPORT has detailed how much money Barcelona still owes to clubs for the Ferran Torres deal. The figures are quite significant and it’s safe to say that the Spaniard has not lived up to the billing.

Barcelona still owes Manchester City €13m in the short-term and €13m in the long-term for Ferran Torres and a smaller amount to Valencia. Considering our current financial situation, that is quite a strain to have on our shoulders for a player who is underperforming.

However, if there is one thing you have to say about Ferran, it is that he is one of the hardest-working players in the squad and there is a reason that Hansi Flick places so much trust in him, despite his statistical underperformance.

Right now, Barcelona will be hoping for Ferran to return from his injury as soon as possible, as he adds valuable depth to the squad. Let’s wait and see how long it takes before we see ‘the Shark’ in action again.
