Don Goodman feels Harry Gray's development would benefit from staying at Leeds.

With 16-year-old striker Harry Gray making his senior debut for Leeds United on Easter Monday, the Whites look set to have another potential star on their hands.

The young frontman has been earmarked for success at Elland Road for a while now, and got his first taste of senior men’s football in the recent 6-0 demolition of Stoke City, a victory which sealed Leeds’ return to the Premier League.

That appearance saw Gray become the fourth-youngest debutant in club history, but, as we have come to expect by now for young talents who come through at Championship clubs, he is already being tracked by one of the country’s biggest clubs, in Tottenham Hotspur.

According to GiveMeSport, the North London outfit are open to the possibility of trying to prize him away from West Yorkshire in their continued bid to attract exciting young talent.

Don Goodman believes Gray needs first-team opportunities

Just under a year since they signed Gray’s older brother, Archie from Leeds, Tottenham are ensuring they also keep track of the younger sibling.

Although the younger Gray brother is also tipped for a big future, the handful of minutes that he received against Stoke represented his first tentative foray into first-team football.

As such, Leeds will surely be keen to ensure that he remains with the club in order to continue his development at a steady and measured pace, rather than facing a large amount of upheaval at a young age by moving to Tottenham.

Older brother Archie had plenty of Championship experience before he sealed his £30m move to Spurs last summer, having featured in every single league game for the Whites during the 2023/24 season.

EFL pundit Don Goodman believes it would be better for Harry Gray to build up towards a similar level of experience at Leeds before he moves elsewhere.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman said: “Personally, I don’t think Spurs are going to be on their own when it comes to high-end clubs scouting Harry Gray. The reports coming out of Elland Road are sensational, in that this could be a very special talent, maybe even more so than his brother Archie, which would be an incredible feat.

“At the moment though, it’s about playing football week in, week out and learning your trade. I think if Spurs did sign him, you would imagine it would be possible that they would loan him back to Leeds or a team where he would play regular first team football.

“At that age, you need a slow, considered introduction to football, where you’re not overworked, but you get plenty of opportunities at first-team level.

“That, for me, would be the best thing for him.”

Comparisons between the Gray brothers will continue to grow

With Harry Gray now at the stage where he appears to be ready for occasional first-team minutes, comparisons between the two brothers will surely continue to increase as he continues his development.

Archie has adapted impressively well at Tottenham, despite the fact he has been forced to play large portions of the season at centre back, such has been the severity of Spurs’ injury crisis.

Still only 19, he has become a Premier League regular already, despite the fact that Ange Postecoglou’s team have endured a disappointing season.

As impressive as his start at Tottenham has been, there have even been suggestions previously that the younger Gray brother has the higher ceiling of the two.

Harry, who has been in electric form for Leeds’ Under 21s team in the Premier League 2 of late, is already thought by many to be destined for the top.

Only time will tell how the 16-year-old develops, but if he continues on his current trajectory, Leeds can expect to have plenty more of the country’s top clubs chasing him in the near future.
