Juventus saw their perfect start to the Serie A Femminile season end after a goalless draw against Inter on match day seven. Meanwhile, reigning champions Roma claimed a much-needed victory in their home meeting with AC Milan.
As well as those two games, we also round up the action from the weekend’s three other fixtures, including a hat-trick for Como’s Eli del Estal. Let’s dive into the latest action.
There were no goals in the first match of the weekend, but there was a red card in the second period. Napoli’s Natalie Muth was dismissed for two bookable offences in the 55th minute. The red card did not prove too costly as Napoli stood firm to record a second straight goalless draw. As for Sampdoria, they stay in ninth place and two points adrift of Napoli.
Fiorentina required just 12 minutes to hit the front in Saturday’s home clash with Lazio. Agnese Bonfantini latched onto an exquisite chipped pass to prod the ball past Sara Cetinja. Eleonora Goldoni produced the Lazio response on the stroke of half time when she headed in from Martina Zanoli’s driven cross. Goldoni scored again on the hour mark to completely turn the game on its head.
Fiorentina boss Sebastián de la Fuente swiftly turned to his bench, introducing Michela Catena with his first change of the contest. It ultimately proved to be an inspired move as Catena required just one minute to pull her side level. The substitute saw her right-footed shot take a wicked deflection off Federica D’Auria and into the net.
The gripping encounter produced more drama when Lazio’s Martina Piemonte fired wide from the penalty spot to the relief of Cecilie Fiskerstrand, who had given away the spot-kick. Piemonte was ultimately left to rue that miss as Fiorentina snatched all three points courtesy of Bonfantini’s driven strike into the bottom corner.
Inter maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a resolute display against leaders Juventus. Goalkeeper Cecilía Rán Rúnarsdóttir made a crucial save to deny Cristiana Girelli from close range in the closing stages of the first half. Inter threatened to snatch all three points in the second half when Beatrice Merlo’s deep cross crashed against the frame of the goal. As it proved, the two sides ultimately had to be content with a share of the spoils. Juventus will head into the international break as league leaders, while Inter are four points adrift in third spot.
Roma fought hard to claim all three points in their home meeting with Milan. Evelyn Ijeh scored for the second game in a row to get Milan off to the perfect start. Roma were behind for just 17 minutes until Manuela Giugliano fired a powerful strike off the underside of the crossbar to send the two sides into the break on level terms. The hosts ultimately completed the turnaround through Valentina Giacinti’s 75th minute effort. The Italy international produced a diving header to score her second league goal of the season. The victory moved Roma above Milan and into fourth position.
Sassuolo went into half-time on level terms after Gina Chmielinski cancelled out Nadine Nischler’s opener. Eli del Estal restored Como’s lead just after the hour mark, tapping home from Alex Kerr’s low cross. Just four minutes later, the pair combined again for Del Estal to slot past Lia Lonni. Chmielinski then lobbed Astrid Gilardi to halve the deficit with 13 minutes left to play of regulation time.
However, Sassulo’s hopes of salvaging a point were swiftly ended by Del Estal. The Spanish forward headed home from a deep free-kick to wrap up her hat-trick and Como’s second win of the season. As for Sassuolo, they remain at the foot of the table after falling to a fifth consecutive defeat.
