Scott McTominay scored with an acrobatic volley to secure Napoli’s fourth Serie A title after a dramatic deciding shootout on Friday night, pipping Inter Milan by one point.

The Azzurri came into the night atop the table with Inter Milan sitting second, one point behind. The two sides kicked off simultaneously to decide whether the Scudetto would stay in Milan or move south to Naples.

All the defending champions Inter could do was win as they visited Cesc Fabregas’ Como, and they did so thanks to goals from Stefan de Vrij and Joaquin Correa while legendary goalkeeper Pepe Reina was shown a red card in his last game before retirement.

They had one hand on the Scudetto early in the night, though, sitting atop the table for 20 blissful minutes as De Vrij opened the scoring while Napoli remained deadlocked.

To clinch it, though, they required a significant slip-up from the league leaders as they hosted Cagliari, and it would not come.

McTominay hit a stunning bicycle kick to open the scoring and send Napoli back to the top of the table shortly before halftime.

Romelu Lukaku then powered past Yerry Mina and scored to double their lead early in the second half.

They dug in through the remaining half an hour, resisting what little threat Cagliari posed as they rode out the result to lift the title for the second time in three years, just one point the difference as Antonio Conte became the first manager to win Serie A with three different teams.

The Italian, who has been linked with a move away from Napoli come the end of the season, was made to watch from the stands as he served a touchline ban, but burst onto the pitch at full time to celebrate with his players and their elated supporters.

The Scotland international McTominay was the hero of the night, running laps of the Diego Maradona Stadium at full time as he looked to soak up the adoration of as many supporters as possible. He has made an indelible impression on the city of Naples since signing from Manchester United last summer, becoming an immediate fan favourite as he earned comparisons to the man whose name adorns his new home stadium.

The party will rage on for hours if not days in Naples, but Inter will have to put their emotions to one side and pick up the pieces in short order. They have just seven days’ grace before they will travel to Munich to face French champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
