Shameful Nkunku and Sancho should have been dropped or subbed long before latest stinkers

Chelsea were very poor against Arsenal in yesterday’s defeat at the Emirates, and very few of the players who put on a Blue shirt can claim to have had a good game.

A look at the stats on SofaScore show some pretty healthy numbers all around – but that’s just because it was a tight final score. A weakened Arsenal team took their foot off the accelerator after scoring and let us pass the ball around, juicing our stats and making the game look tighter than it was.

The final numbers even allowed Enzo Maresca to make the outrageous claim that we had “controlled” the game. But anyone actually watching the game saw the reality.

Plays like Robert Sanchez, Levi Colwill and Christopher Nkunku all got decent scores from the stats site, but all were actually pretty dreadful in the game that played out on the pitch.

Blues poor collectively and individually

We have some sympathy for Enzo Maresca in the fact he selected Nkunku and Jadon Sancho out wide because he has so few other options while several players are injured – although given how dreadful they have both been in recent weeks, one wonders what Tyrique George has to do to get a start.

He may not be as experienced or as polished as those two, but he at least looks like he’s interested in having a go, which is more than you can say for Nkunku. Sancho meanwhile has one shot on target in 2025 so far.

We wrote weeks ago that George deserved a Premier League start. Since then, those ahead of him in the pecking order have continued to disappoint. What more can he do for Maresca to try him? We’d rather watch the academy kid try and fail than Nkunku not try at all.
