FLW looks at the players with somewhat uncertain futures at Bramall Lane
Sheffield United are enjoying a fine season of Championship football under Chris Wilder this term, with the Steel City outfit looking to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
The predicament at Bramall Lane seven months ago made for an intriguing season, as the Blades began their second tier return with a two-point deficit which was immediately wiped out, before maintaining a position among the promotion front-runners for the majority of the campaign alongside Leeds United, Burnley and Sunderland.
United supporters were given further reason to celebrate as COH Sports' reported £111m takeover in December, which paved the way for high-profile January additions such as Tom Cannon and the return of Ben Brereton Diaz on loan.
There is plenty of quality throughout all areas of Wilder's squad as the season reaches its climax, with plenty of big decisions also set to be made in the coming weeks and months, and ones which could depend on which league the club features in next term.
This could also impact whether the Blades boss makes the aforementioned Chilean international's second loan switch to S2 permanent, having the option to do so at the conclusion of the campaign, whilst Harry Clarke, Hamza Choudhury, Harry Clarke, Alfie Gilchrist, Rob Holding and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi will return to their parent clubs in June.
With that being said, FLW looks at those who are currently out-of-contract in South Yorkshire at the end of the season, and whether fresh terms are warranted.
Jack Robinson has become part of the furniture at Bramall Lane, having made over 140 appearances for the Blades since joining from Nottingham Forest in January 2020.
The 31-year-old has continued to bring a wealth of experience and quality at the back, alongside the likes of centre-back partner Anel Ahmedhodzic and Michael Cooper between the sticks, as United have one of the Championship's meanest defensive records across the campaign.
Wilder's trust in the Liverpool academy graduate was showcased at the start of a squad rebuild last summer, as Robinson was appointed club captain after a dismal one-season return to the Premier League, with the hope that he would once again excel in the second tier after playing a key role in the club's 2023 promotion season under Paul Heckingbottom.
After failing to invest strongly enough in the top flight, it remains to be seen how much backing the boyhood Blade in the dugout will receive to improve all areas of his squad, despite being defensively sound since shipping a top-flight record high of 104 goals.
And, to the delight of many at Bramall Lane, it seems as if Robinson will be on track to feature for the club for at least one more season, as it was revealed by Danny Hall of the Sheffield Star that the £25,000 per-week earner is set to trigger an extension sooner rather than later, after penning his most recent deal in July 2023.
"Chris Wilder said recently that Robinson’s extra year would kick in once he played 25 games, but there was some uncertainty over whether that meant 25 appearances, made 25 starts, in the Championship or in all competitions ... and there was also a suggestion he’d have to play in 50 percent of United’s games to trigger the extension," Hall stated on March 20th.
Rhian Brewster had so often been a source of frustration for those of a Red and White persuasion, having rarely lived up to the club-record £23.5m fee United forked out for his services in October 2020.
However, in recent times, the former Liverpool man has become one of the most popular men in the Steel City, from a Blades perspective at least, especially for his 64th-minute winner at Hillsborough against Sheffield Wednesday on March 16th.
After two injury-hit seasons, the striker has been in strong form of late, which also saw him bag his first goal on home soil since January 2022 with a stunning finish in yet another crucial victory against play-off hopefuls, Coventry City.
Following his strike in the Steel City Derby last month, Brewster hoped that it gave Blades supporters a reminder of his ability, just weeks after Wilder believed that the 24-year-old had plenty more to offer for the club with just months of his lengthy five-year deal remaining.
Based off recent performances, the former Swansea City loanee has given himself a platform to continue building his confidence and goal return at the business end of the season, which will definitely give his boss and the hierarchy plenty to ponder, as it is also estimated that the striker is the club's highest permanently contracted earner.
It had been reported in February that the respective parties were in talks over a new deal, and such circumstances have remained ongoing in recent weeks, which Brewster will hope is another positive step, and he will hope to eventually prove himself as a top-flight level player if the Blades are successful in their promotion bid.
