Liverpool’s resurgence under Arne Slot has been a thrilling spectacle, but what truly stands out is the transformation of Ryan Gravenberch. Brought to Anfield from Bayern Munich in September 2023, the Dutch midfielder struggled to make his mark in his first season. However, fast forward to 2024, and he is now at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield—a player whose performances have left both fans and critics in awe.
James Pearce, writing for The Athletic, perfectly captures Gravenberch’s progression in his recent article. One moment, in particular, sums up his development: receiving the ball under pressure from two Bologna players, Gravenberch effortlessly flicked the ball into space and glided across the pitch to launch an attack. This piece of skill had Anfield buzzing. As Pearce noted, “So composed, so elegant, so confident, so effective.”
Slot’s decision to place Gravenberch at the base of midfield has been a game-changer for both the player and the team. Moving away from the more rigid and traditional midfield setups of Klopp’s era, Slot’s approach is all about fluidity and dynamism. And this system has brought the best out of Gravenberch, allowing him to display his full range of abilities.

His statistics from the recent 2-0 win over Bologna are impressive: 91% pass completion, two chances created, and possession won on nine occasions. More importantly, his ability to operate in tight spaces and his dribbling skills have made him indispensable. Slot praised his midfielder’s contribution, stating, “Ryan was outstanding again with his dribbling ability… but if we only focus on the dribbles, we forget how important he is without the ball.”
Liverpool’s failed pursuit of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad is a fascinating subplot in Gravenberch’s rise to prominence. Had Zubimendi not backtracked on a move to Anfield, we might be seeing a very different story play out. As Pearce highlights, “If Zubimendi had arrived at Anfield then it is highly likely Gravenberch would have been on the bench regularly.”
Liverpool’s decision not to seek an alternative after Zubimendi’s rejection was bold. Instead, Slot backed Gravenberch, a player he had seen thrive in a deep-lying role at Ajax. This faith has been rewarded. Slot has helped mould Gravenberch into a modern No. 6, one who is not just a destroyer but a ball-playing orchestrator, crucial in breaking opposition lines.
It’s also worth mentioning that Gravenberch’s increased physicality has played a part in his success. He has completed 90 minutes in all eight Premier League and Champions League matches this season, a stark contrast to last season when stamina was a concern.
Gravenberch’s journey from Bayern’s bench to Liverpool’s midfield lynchpin is remarkable. Pearce describes his debut season at Anfield as “uninspiring,” with 17 of his 38 appearances coming off the bench. But now, his name is chanted louder by the Kop with each passing week, drawing comparisons to the revered Georginio Wijnaldum. However, as Pearce rightly points out, Gravenberch offers something extra—a touch of flair that Wijnaldum didn’t possess.

While Gravenberch’s rise has been meteoric, tougher challenges await. Chelsea and Arsenal are looming on the horizon, and it is in these matches where we will see the true measure of his growth. As Pearce aptly concludes, “On form, you would not swap him for anyone.”
Liverpool fans have every right to feel ecstatic about Ryan Gravenberch. The Dutchman has not only exceeded expectations but has become a symbol of this new era under Arne Slot. His ability to transition from a fringe player to a midfield general is a testament to both his talent and Slot’s tactical genius.
The failed pursuit of Zubimendi now seems like a blessing in disguise. While the Spanish midfielder would have brought quality, Gravenberch has delivered that and more, giving Liverpool the dynamism they so desperately needed. His ability to dictate play, dribble past opponents, and win second balls has added a new dimension to the team’s play.
Liverpool’s midfield, long criticised for its lack of creativity and legs, is now one of the most balanced in the league. With Mac Allister providing stability and Szoboszlai adding flair, Gravenberch has slotted in perfectly. His partnership with these players could be the key to unlocking Liverpool’s full potential this season.
As fans, we can’t help but dream big. If Gravenberch continues on this trajectory, there’s no telling how far this Liverpool side can go. Games against Chelsea and Arsenal will be tough, but with Gravenberch pulling the strings, there’s a real sense that anything is possible.
