Sorry Arsene Wenger I can’t buy your support for Manchester City | OneFootball

In a rather shocking development this week Arsene Wenger has come out in support of Manchester City in their legal ‘battle’ with the Premier League. The hearing regarding Manchester City’s infamous 115 case is currently ongoing. While Wenger made some good points I just can’t buy what he is saying. As history shows Wenger was and has been arguably one of the biggest critics of City’s owners which began when he was the manager of Arsenal.

Speaking on Bein Sports Arsene Wenger spoke out in support of Manchester City and had a crack at the Premier League’s Financial Fairplay regulations. Wenger had this to when speaking about the entire situation: “The rules of Financial Fair Play today have to be changed in the Premier League because they face competition from other leagues. At the moment you can’t see a club like Man City being charged by 115 charges. Different charges in a football season. I don’t believe in that. A clever club, well managed, well run, and the Premier League already lost a case, the first case against them.”

Arsene Wenger may well be right, but it’s hard to digest his opinion given he has been one of Manchester City’s harshest critics.

Arsene Wenger does raise some valid points. It does appear that the Premier League’s FFP rules do need adjusting. Also, Manchester City are a well-run club. That’s not in dispute. But the former Arsenal manager supporting Manchester City is hard to swallow. Especially from a Manchester City fan’s point of view.

Ever since Sheikh Mansour brought City back in 2008, Arsene Wenger was one of the club’s biggest critics. From the moment City started to make an imprint in English football, Wenger was one of the loudest voices pushing for financial control to be brought into the game. It was Wenger who brought the term ‘financial doping‘ to the fore. Where Manchester City and the Premier League find themselves currently is a direct result of the Financial Fairplay rules that were introduced when a new player entered the fold in 2008. As Manchester City brought players from Arsenal like Kolo Toure, Samir Nasri, Emmanuel Adebayor and Gael Clichy it was Wenger who cried poor as his club profited from City’s funds.

So I’m sorry Arsene Wenger, I can’t buy your support for Manchester City. The former Arsenal manager may be right with what he recently said on Bein Sports but I can’t buy it. The journey to here has seen Wenger voice his criticism of Manchester City along the way. That’s been louder then his new found support of Manchester City in their infamous 115 case.
