Further, the FA Cup is a demanding tournament where failing to score translates to failing to win. Unfortunately, the Saints had to experience it the hard way when Marcus Edwards got on the scoresheet.

Southampton's player ratings following an early FA Cup elimination

Thus, let's observe each Southampton player's individual outing from yesterday's upset on a scale of 1-10.

GK - Alex McCarthy: 5

Commendable decision making to deny Burnley in the first half. Still, must be unsatisfied to not preserve his clean sheet.

CB - Jan Bednarek: 5

Led the Southampton defence bravely but made a deflected block on the solitary goal.

CB - James Bree: 4

Lucky that his early man marking mistake didn't result in a goal. Otherwise, was decent in the build up phase.

CB - Welington: 6

Heroic goal line defending to keep the score at 0-0. Later, was left helpless as the ball fell to the on-rushing Edwards who found the back of the net.

LWB - Ryan Manning: 4

Deployed as a wide midfielder but endured a nightmare with two costly misses.

RWB - Kyle Walker-Peters: 5

Provided attacking support to Tyler Dibling on his return. Further, many fans would have been wishing for Manning's chances to come towards Walker-Peters' instead.

CM - Joe Aribo: 7

Played in midfield but came to rescue the Saints' five-man defence on multiple occasions.

CM - Lesley Ugochukwu: 5

Looked clueless in dealing with Burnley's midfield pressing. Clearly, this performance was a reflection of his initial shortcomings at Southampton.

CAM - Mateus Fernandes: 4

Didn't seem fatigued but had an overall performance dip on Saturday.

ST - Kamaldeen Sulemana: 5

A similar finishing display as Manning throughout the game. Consequently, Ivan Juric called out the winger to remain composed under crucial attacking phases.

ST - Tyler Dibling: 4
