Milan sacked Massimiliano Allegri in January 2014 after a 4-3 away loss at Sassuolo, but the Rossoneri still failed to qualify for a European competition, finishing eighth, just as they did in the 2024-25 season.

Multiple sources report that Allegri will return to Milan for the 2025-26 campaign, replacing Sergio Conceiçao after just six months.

Allegri already coached the Rossoneri from 2010 to 2014. He did win his first Serie A title as a coach in his debut season at San Siro in 2011, but he was sacked less than three years later (January 2014) after an away 4-3 defeat at Sassuolo.

Allegri won 91 games from 178 at Milan, drawing 49 times and losing 38 games.

At that time, the Rossoneri were fighting for a Champions League spot, and the sales of big players for financial reasons in the previous years had proven costly. Furthermore, stars returning to the club, like Kaka and Mario Balotelli, were far below their prime.

The Rossoneri sacked Allegri after a 4-3 away loss at Sassuolo on January 12, 2014.

Clarence Seedorf replaced the Italian tactician until the end of the season, but the ex-Netherlands star failed to produce the change Milan needed, finishing the season in eighth position.

The club achieved exactly the same result in 2024-25, collecting inconsistent results under Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceiçao.

Domenico Berardi scored all four of Sassuolo’s goals, leading to Allegri’s dismissal a few days later.

Sassuolo were a newly promoted Serie A side, and ironically, they have just gained another promotion to Italy’s top flight, so they’ll play again in Serie A next season.
