Chelsea’s slump since Christmas has had a common thread. The team play well for a bit, concede and then struggle to react.
But in his post match press conference after the 2-1 defeat to Brighton, the Chelsea boss was in denial about his team’s failings. Asked if he was worried about their lack of reaction, he simply said he wasn’t:
“I don’t think so. After we concede the second goal, we had three or four chances to score so the reaction was there. Every game is different. In terms of reaction, after the second goal we concede, the reaction was there,” the former Leicester coach claimed.
Well, we could have been fooled. We didn’t see a “reaction” so much as Brighton just sitting on their lead. In any case, why should we wait until we’re losing to start playing anyway?

Maresca comments about this team’s performance overall, and the positives, were even harder to take seriously:
“We started very good, controlled and created some chances. The second-half more or less happened the same. If there is something good after a defeat is now we can be focused on the Premier League and Conference.”
Frankly those comments should infuriate any Chelsea fans listening to him. This coach has a £1.5bn squad, he’s had a full A team and a full B team to play through the whole season so far. All he had to do was go and beat a Brighton team that were battered 7-0
Now, not only did he lose, he’s also claiming that it could be a “good” thing as it allows the team to focus on other competitions. What’s good about that? If we play like that we won’t win them either, so what’s the point.
