Getafe have never been a pleasant team to face in La Liga. Big teams going to the Coliseum Stadium often know what to expect. Jose Bordalas sets his team up to play a very boring brand of football and they are immensely proud of that.

The Madrid-based side resorted to all these antics and even more to hold Barcelona to a 1-1 draw in La Liga last night. It was one of those games that the Catalan club simply could not get a grip of with everything that was going around.

For starters, they left the grass as long as they could, to prevent Barcelona from playing their natural passing game. The crowd got right behind the home team. All this is their choice but racially abusing Alejandro Balde was where Getafe really lost the plot.

The Spanish defender had reported that a section of the Getafe fanbase had subjected him to racial insults and in his post-match press conference, Hansi Flick was asked about the same. As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, the German was cut-throat in his answer. He said:

“There’s no place for insults in football. Those people should stay at home”

Racism is becoming a huge issue in Spanish football. It takes the charm away from the game (yes, even more than what Getafe as a team did) and in general, it has no place in the sport or out there anywhere in the professional or personal world.

It is to everyone’s absolute disgust that it is 2025 and players are still having to go through this in stadiums. Getafe as a fanbase have to take a serious look at themselves for not knowing just where to draw the line.

Ultimately, it is two teams of 11 players led by a head coach trying to win a game of football. There is only so much to it. Racially abusing someone has no place and one can only hope strict punishment is meted out to those caught committing the offense yesterday.
