AC Milan secured just one point from their encounter with Fiorentina last night and as it was a rather entertaining game, there are some interesting stats to note.
Fiorentina scored two goals within the first ten minutes, shocking San Siro, but Milan managed to find a way back once again. Tammy Abraham and Luka Jovic rescued the Rossoneri with a goal each and thus continued their impressive form.
That being said, it’s a draw that doesn’t mean much for the Rossoneri in the league, still in ninth place with a lot of points to make up. Below, we have collected the most interesting stats and facts from the clash.
Yesterday’s game was entertaining, at least for the neutral spectators, as we truly saw end-to-end stuff especially in the second half. Fiorentina were arguably the better side if we consider how they played, but Milan still managed to create some dangerous chances.
The xG is perhaps telling, even if La Viola had more ‘big chances’ during the game. That being said, the stats below also show that both sides didn’t defend anywhere near good enough, and for Milan that was very obvious.
Milan had the opportunity to move within one point of Fiorentina, but as a result of the draw, the four-point gap remains. As we also discussed in our latest newsletter, a 9th-place finish seems very likely for the Rossoneri if you look at the schedule.
As added by OptaPaolo, Milan have registered fewer than 50 points after 31 rounds for only the third time in the last ten seasons, after 2015-16 (49) and 2019-20 (49). They respectively finished in 7th and 6th place in those campaigns. In other words, the outlook is indeed dire.
Malick Thiaw scored yet another own-goal last night, trying to make up for a mistake by his teammates Yunus Musah. The German stretched for the low cross and failed to clear it, seemingly attempting to take a touch rather than clearing it first time.
Either way, it was his third own-goal of the season (!) and he’s the first Serie A player to achieve that in a single season since Jean-Pierre Cyprien of Lecce in 1997-98 (via MilanNews). Clearly, a stat for the German international to forget.
Thanks to his goal last night, which was wonderful by the way, Abraham hit double figures in all competitions this season (10 goals). The way he has bounced back in the last few weeks is indeed commendable and he could be very important in the season finale.
The same goes for Jovic, who has scored two goals in his last two games. He played more or less as an attacking midfielder last night and linked up really well with his teammates, which is why we named him the MOTM in our ratings.
