You can only tell so much from the ratings given out by a stats site – and of course they never really cover the full picture of what makes a player’s performance good or bad in a game.

But it’s still an interesting thing to check to find out how the numbers compare with the eye test, and last night’s game was no exception. Chelsea rolled to a 4-1 win against Panathinaikos in the Conference League in what was ultimately an easy win. But there were tough moments along the way, and goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen was called into action multiple times to keep his team in the game.

It was a perfect time for the goalkeeper to shine. Number one option Robert Sanchez is struggling, and after a couple of wobbly games from the Spaniard combined with a couple of bad results, it was the ideal moment for Jorgensen to seize.

Jorgensen takes his chance to show what he can do as a sweeper

We’re still not entirely sure about Jorgensen’s ceiling as a player, but there’s no doubt that the sporting directors saw something in him, and he’s going to get plenty more chances in the various cup competitions to prove it.

The stats had him with just a 6.9 rating on SofaScore – but that doesn’t tell the whole story. “Saves: 2” doesn’t show how good those saves were, or how important they were in terms of timing.

The 38 accurate passes from 40 is also a very healthy number for a player trying to break into a team which wants to continue to move towards a “sweeper keeper” style setup where the glovesman is an integral part of the build-up.

That is a real weakness is Sanchez’s game, and therefore an area that Jorgensen can really hope to make ground on his rival.
