Ruben Amorim’s rebuild at Manchester United is set to begin this summer with a major clear out expected at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese head coach will hope to raise funds through player sales and there are a handful of players who will ease the wage bill by leaving at the end of their respective contracts.
First team stars Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelöf are expected to part ways with the club in the summer with elder statesmen Tom Heaton and Jonny Evans also out of contract.
However, as reported by the Mirror, Heaton and Evans could see their stay extended in a coaching capacity, with United open to adding the pair to Amorim’s staff.
Both players have vast experience in the game and are well established at United having both re-joined the club after leaving to further their careers.
Heaton and Evans were involved in the glory days at United which seem a lifetime ago after a decade of mismanagement, both on and off the pitch.
No formal offers have been made to the duo at present but deals do feel relatively straight forward should the pair hang up their playing boots at the end of the campaign.
Heaton has spent the last few years helping the first choice ‘keepers at the club since re-signing in 2021 and has made just one European appearance in his second stint at Old Trafford.
Evans was expected to play a similar emergency role as Heaton upon his return in 2023 but found himself playing a lot more than first expected due to United’s defensive injuries.
To his credit the Northern Irishman looked at ease in United’s backline and impressed enough to earn himself an additional year on his contract last summer.
Evans was enjoying further playing time this season but has since suffered his own injury issues which are likely to have seen him play his last game in the red of United.
The pair are well respected members of the squad and keeping them on in a coaching capacity is likely to be well received by all at Carrington.
