Tottenham and Man United Fight for Europa League Glory in Bilbao

There is no escaping the sense of desperation wrapped around this Europa League final. For both Tottenham and Manchester United, Bilbao is not merely a backdrop to a European occasion — it is a potential lifeline after seasons that have lurched between mediocrity and mayhem.
Spurs, without silverware since 2008, are clinging to the idea that Ange Postecoglou can instil a sense of permanence to moments of promise. His vision is ambitious, perhaps idealistic, but it has reached a point where ideals must yield results. Seventeenth in the Premier League and with injuries decimating the squad, Postecoglou’s project now hinges on a single evening in the Basque Country.

Manchester United’s story is strikingly similar. Ruben Amorim may have dragged them through turbulent waters, but the team still sits 16th in the Premier League. His reward for guiding them to another European final? The same uncertainty that haunts his opposite number. European success, in this case, is no luxury — it is a necessity.
Both sides have journeyed to this final in defiance of domestic form. Spurs dismantled Bodo/Glimt with a composed second-leg display, emerging 5-1 winners on aggregate. The tie was less about fireworks and more about functionality — a rare trait this season for a club known more for moments than substance.
United, meanwhile, showed flashes of flair against Athletic Bilbao, turning a nervy first half at Old Trafford into a dominant 7-1 aggregate win. “They are limited for their minutes in the game but they can help us to win the game,” said Amorim of key players Joshua Zirkzee, Diogo Dalot and Leny Yoro, all fit enough to feature.
Tottenham’s injury list is a sobering read. James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall are all out. Radu Dragusin remains a long-term absentee, although all four have travelled with the squad. Heung-min Son, however, is fit and expected to start after featuring against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. Postecoglou confirmed Pape Matar Sarr is “fine”.
For United, Jonny Evans is back in training, but Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt are unavailable. It’s a patched-up side, but one with enough firepower and nous to unsettle Spurs in moments that matter.
This is not a clash of titans at their peak, but it remains one of immense intrigue. Spurs have won all three meetings against United this season and remain unbeaten in the fixture since October 2022. Yet, United have reserved their best for these nights. They have stood tall against Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, and carry a certain pragmatism that might just edge this contest.
Prediction: Man United 2-2: Win on penalties
