The Lilywhites haven’t prepared for this afternoon’s contest in a conventional manner. On Friday, thousands of Tottenham fans crowded the streets surrounding the stadium to witness an open-top bus parade.

With the club celebrating in style, their starting line-up for the visit of Brighton is a mystery. In his pre-match press conference, Postecoglou confirmed that captain Heung-min Son and Europa League Player of the Tournament Cristian Romero will not feature. The pair have been nursing minor issues over the last few weeks and will not be risked.

Academy prospects Mikey Moore, Dane Scarlett and Will Lankshear could be trusted from the start.

There is still a slim chance that Brighton qualify for European football next season.

Tottenham’s season was rescued on Wednesday night as they overcame Manchester United in the Europa League final.

The final was devoid of quality and was epitomised by Brennan Johnson’s winner just before the break. A scrappy passage of play saw the Welshman’s effort deflect off Luke Shaw and roll into the net.

In a rare instance this term, Spurs displayed their resolve to preserve their clean sheet and end their well-documented trophy drought.

Euphoria spread across one-half of the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao for several reasons. Their success in the Europa League also resulted in their qualification for the Champions League next season. Last Meeting: Brighton 3-2 Tottenham, Premier League, 6th October 2024

Brighton completed a thrilling comeback to snatch the full complement of points from Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou’s side commenced the contest in a clinical manner and opened the scoring midway through the first half.

Brennan Johnson timed his run to perfection and was fed by Dominic Solanke’s inch-perfect through ball. The Welshman extended his prolific run in front of goal with a first-time finish past Bart Verbruggen. For the sixth successive match, Johnson’s name was etched onto the scoresheet.

Before the break, Spurs doubled their advantage courtesy of some questionable goalkeeping from Verbruggen. James Maddison’s shot squirmed through the grasp of the Dutchman and sent the nearby away end into raptures.

Without any indication, Tottenham totally collapsed after the interval.

Indecisive defending from Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie resulted in the latter’s attempted clearance falling to Yankuba Minteh. The young winger made no mistake from close-quarters to give the hosts an interest.

Shortly after, the Seagulls were level. Another summer signing displayed their credentials as Georginio Rutter wriggled clear of Van de Ven and drilled into the bottom corner.

By the 68th minute, Brighton’s resurgence yielded a winner.

More abject defending from the Spurs backline allowed the lively Rutter to get to the byline. The Frenchman showed great desire to reach the ball and his tackle on Rodrigo Bentancur served as a searching cross. Danny Welbeck was positioned perfectly to head in the third and seal his side’s turnaround.

Udogie almost atoned for his string of errors with an equaliser, but Verbruggen was equal to the drilled attempt.

Tottenham returned to the capital empty-handed and only had themselves to blame.
