The first of two summer windows opens this weekend

In demand: Viktor Gyokeres, Leroy Sane and Florian Wirtz

London Standard

The two summer window is not yet open but Europe's biggest clubs are already making moves. Arsenal have been given permission to schedule a medical for Martin Zubimendi after triggering his £51million release clause, while a move for a much-needed striker appears to come down to Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres, who will cost £60m, or Benjamin Sesko, who will cost £92.5m. There is also interest in Leroy Sane on a free, who Tottenham have been offered.

Manchester United's miserable season arguably hit a new low with defeat to ASEAN All-Stars in a post-season friendly, but have at least already secured a key attacking signing for next season in Matheus Cunha, who is set to finalise a £62.5m move from Wolves. Meanwhile, captain Bruno Fernandes must decide on a move to Saudi Arabia before the end of the week.

Liverpool face late competition from Real Madrid for Florian Wirtz, despite submitting their first bid, reportedly worth €100million (£85m) plus add-ons, for the Bayer Leverkusen star. They are close to wrapping up deals for Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, though, and are ready to rival Chelsea for Frankfurt frontman Hugo Ekitike and have begun talks over an £84m deal. Real Madrid belief grows over Wirtz hijacking

Real Madrid are growing confident of hijacking Liverpool's move for Florian Wirtz.

The Reds appeared to have a free run at the Bayer Leverkusen star after Manchester City pulled out of negotiations and then Bayern Munich admitted defeat amid reports the player had rejected the German giants.

But Real Madrid have other ideas.

According to Spanish publication AS, Madrid believe they can hijack Liverpool's efforts and lure the player to the Santiago Bernabeu, helped by head coach Xabi Alonso's move from Leverkusen to Madrid.

The Spanish giants believe Alonso is the ace up their sleeve to land Europe's hottest property. Alonso turned Wirtz into the continent's most in-demand player.

The race, it appears, remains wide open.

West Brom set to make move for Mason

Tottenham are braced for an approach from West Bromwich Albion for their assistant coach Ryan Mason, with the Championship club keen on making him their new manager.

West Brom are on the hunt for a new boss after sacking Tony Mowbray last month when the club’s play-off hopes ended.

Mason, who is one of Ange Postecoglou’s assistants at Spurs, has been courted by clubs before trying to tempt him into his first managerial job.

Back in October, Anderlecht held talks with the 33-year-old, but he ended up staying at Tottenham.

Anderlecht and Mason mutually decided back then that it was not the right time for him to move to the Belgian giants.

It remains to be seen if the former midfielder could now be tempted to make the jump into management.

Lokonga exclusive: 'No regrets over Arsenal move but now I want stability'

Albert Sambi Lokonga is unsure exactly what the future holds for him beyond this summer, but he hopes whatever happens the end result is stability.

The Arsenal midfielder has just finished his third loan spell in two and a half years after spending last season with Sevilla.

Lokonga enjoyed the experience, fulfilling a childhood dream of playing in Spain, but now the season is over attention has turned towards his future.

The Belgian’s agent has already met with new Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta and the club have taken up the option to extend his contract by a year so that it runs until next summer.

“So the situation is really, really open,” Lokonga tells Standard Sport. “To talk about my future… I can’t say anything, because I really don’t know where I will end up.

“I can’t say it’s tough, because I still have one year on my contract, but it is true that as a player you want to know where you will end up or where you will stay.

“For me, I really don’t know what is going to happen - but what I know for sure is I need stability. I need a club where I can stay for two or three years, to play and develop again.”

Chelsea tipped for Sancho U-turn after Conference League final heroics

Chelsea have been told to sign Jadon Sancho permanently after his Conference League final heroics.

Sancho joined the Blues on loan from Manchester United last summer, with an obligation to make the move permanent for £25million. However, after a somewhat impressive start, Sancho struggled to assert himself in Enzo Maresca's preferred starting line-up.

Reports then emerged that Chelsea could, in fact, cancel their loan-to-buy obligation and send Sancho back to United by paying a £5million penalty.

That was widely expected to happen before Sancho's cameo in the Poland final, which saw him score a stunning, curling effort to settle the cup win against Real Betis.

Asked after the game if a decision had been made on Sancho's future, manager Enzo Maresca said: "We are going to sit with the club and decide what happens for next year.
