It’s the FA Cup classic minnow vs. giant match up on Jan. 12 when the National League’s Tamworth (5th tier) host the Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur in a third round tie. We did some digging to learn more about this club from Staffordshire, England.

  • The club was founded in 1933 after the town’s previous club, Tamworth Castle S.C., dissolved.
  • Their nickname is the Lambs.
  • Tamworth won back-to-back promotions in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons to climb from the Southern Football League (7th tier) into their current spot in the National League (5th tier).
  • They won the FA Vase in 1989 over two games against Sudbury Town. The initial match, a 1-1 draw, was played in Wembley Stadium before 28,000 spectators.
  • Tamworth reached the FA Cup Third Round in 2011-12, losing to Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park.
  • Jasbir Singh, Tamworth’s goalkeeper, works as a building surveyor.
  • Chris Wreh, their back-up striker, was born in New York City.
  • Tamworth defeated League One side Huddersfield Town at home to start their FA Cup run. Tom Tonks assisted the winning goal when his long throw-in deflected off keeper Chris Maxwell’s hand. Tom Tonks. Best. Name. Ever.
  • The FA Cup second round tie against League One Burton Albion went to a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Jasbir Singh saved two PKs. Hadyn Hollis struck the winning shot as the Lambs advanced 4-3.
  • The Lamb Ground, Tamworth’s stadium, was named after a pub that once stood adjacent to the pitch. Teams used to change in the pub prior to the construction of dressing rooms. The pitch is a G3 artificial surface, which means the Spurs won’t get their kit muddy.
  • The visitor’s dressing room is warmed by a plug-in electric heater.
  • 96 places sit between Tottenham and Tamworth, the largest gap in the Third Round.
  • Manager Andy Peaks on how they’ll approach Spurs: “We have to be horrible, we have to be nasty, we have to make it as awkward as possible [for them]… for ninety minutes and see what it brings us.”
