Will Osula signed for Newcastle United on 8 August 2024.

Fair to say that fans were a little underwhelmed.

PSR pressures had seen the club severely restricted in the summer 2024 transfer window.

No new first eleven contenders bought in during that window (indeed none now in the last three windows), the only major permanent deal was Lewis Hall, though that £28m permanent deal had been agreed back in summer 2023 when Hall arrived on an initial one year loan arrangement from Chelsea, with the trigger for the eventual permanent signing based on minimal criteria.

As I said, Newcastle United fans underwhelmed by the Will Osula signing, an initial £10m outlay (potentially rising to £15m if hitting various targets) for the raw young striker who had turned 21 only four days before announced as Newcastle’s new signing.

A striker yet to score a Premier League goal and indeed only three FA Cup goals in total for Sheffield United, with the only other goals in club football for Will Osula, having been during a spell on loan at Derby County in League One.

Less than four weeks after signing for Newcastle United, Will Osula was away with the Denmark Under 21s. He spoke to Danish media and said he was stunned and excited to be at St James’ Park now and knew first team football was something he had to work towards, declaring just under nine months ago; “I’m just happy to be a part of Newcastle, so my time will come.”

Will Osula speaking to Ekstra Bladet about signing for Newcastle United – 4 September 2024:

“It actually happened very quickly.

“I think there were a lot of rumours about me going to Newcastle but I didn’t look into it. I was very focused on the fact that the season in Sheffield should start soon.

“All of a sudden Sheffield [United] came and told me that Newcastle wanted to sign me and that they would accept the offer.

“Then my agent called me and then it just happened quickly over two or three days, when I was in Newcastle and signed the contract.

“When they told me [about Newcastle United’s interest] I was a bit in shock, but I was just so happy.

“I was like, Wow, it’s Newcastle now.

“I had almost prepared myself for the season. I was ready and then Newcastle came quickly overnight. It was something I was shocked and happy about.

“It (signing for Newcastle United) is something that I am very proud of.

“Newcastle is a huge club and I am very happy to have made the switch to Newcastle from Sheffield United. So I’m looking forward to seeing what will happen in the future.

“There are already huge stars [at Newcastle United], so I get there and have to learn their style and how they play.

“I just have to come in and learn a lot of things from the coaches and players. I just have to become a better player and then hopefully my time will come when I can play a lot in the future.

“Newcastle is a huge club. Last season they played in the Champions League and it is not easy when you play in the Premier League, where there are many good teams.

“When you hear Newcastle, it’s a huge chance and a huge club. It is something that I am happy to be a part of, I take it as it comes.

“I’m just happy to be a part of Newcastle, so my time will come.”

Just under nine months later and it has happened, the first Newcastle United Premier League goal for Will Osula…

Will Osula after scoring in the win over Ipswich, his first ever Premier League goal – 26 April 2025:

“You know, I have been praying for this moment and it has finally happened.

“Such a big moment.

“Had to stay patient for a very long time for this moment to happen.

“I want to also thank my teammates for keeping me pushing every day, motivating me to keep working harder and keeping me on the right track, regardless of the circumstances.

“Also the staff, they work me every day, all day.

“And yeah man, I appreciate the fans.

“The fans show me so much love.

“So thank you to all the fans for supporting me constantly and I hope to repay you guys back, with more stuff I can show and love.”

It is Jason Tindall that we as Newcastle United fans AND Will Osula have to thank, for NUFC signing him.

A number of years ago Jason Tindall was part of the coaching staff at Sheffield United and recognised the potential of Will Osula.

The brilliance and patience of Eddie Howe and his coaching team, now looking to have worked their magic, in terms of helping to bring on the young striker to a serious degree.

Will Osula was two years older when he arrived at Newcastle United in summer 2024, than Lewis Hall was when arriving in summer 2023. However, arguably Osula had even less experience in the Premier League/top tier football by that point.

Lewis Hall had started only eight PL matches for Chelsea before heading to Newcastle United, Will Osula only nine.

However, Osula had played those matches for a very weak Sheffield United team who were defending for the vast majority of matches and were effectively relegated a long time before the season ended.

Eddie Howe is a genius and knows exactly what is best for both Will Osula and Newcastle United.

Playing the long game with such a young and inexperienced talent as Lewis Hall, has paid massive dividends.

What a massive boost if Will Osula can also now come through as a serious first team contender, especially with European football demands for NUFC next season.
