During the last Aston Villa Women win, there was more than an impressive 5-2 victory over Arsenal. Among a highly-celebrated Rachel Daly goal and the return of Rachel Corsie, there was a significant milestone for another Rachel Villan.
Only 18 years of age, Rachel Maltby made her WSL and Villa senior team debut on Wednesday during the thrilling win. Subbing on for Mayumi Pacheco during the 69th minute, the defender played at left wing-back for the remainder of the fixture.
The combined efforts of everyone on the pitch proved to be enough to see off the Gunners and secure the three points. For someone to be able to make their first appearance against such a strong side shows a lot of trust from the manager. Far from a token appearance, Natalia Arroyo sensed the visitors on the day beginning to gain something of a foothold in the match and made the adjustments that she felt were needed to prevent a comeback.
For Malby, it was more than a chance to show that she can hold her own. The WSL opportunity will be the first of what she'll hope will be many and a steady run on the pitch in England's top level. While speaking after an earlier U-17 World Cup semifinal match for England, the defender spoke on what it means to play against the best competition. She shared, as can be seen on the Tata Sports YouTube channel:
"I think it's always good good opportunity and great experience to play against the best."
Although it ended up being Chelsea officially solidifying their spot as champions for the season, certainly Arsenal were among the best this year during the 2024-2025 campaign. The same mentality, however, that Maltby used in her approach for the younger Lionesses side showcased itself this week against the Gunners.
Particularly under a new manager, there are opportunities for the current AVWFC players to make an impression and garner further consideration for playing time. Knowing the focus and ability that Malby displayed against Arsenal and her continued drive, the English defender will make a strong ongoing case for herself to see the field on a regular basis for Villa.
