Incoming Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso secured for himself an altogether noteworthy piece of German football history this weekend.
This comes owing to Bayer Leverkusen’s latest result.
Bayer marked their return to action on Saturday, making the trip to Mainz for the respective clubs’ final fixture of the 2024/25 campaign.
When all was said and done, the spoils were shared between the sides, owing to a 2-2 draw.
Leverkusen, as a result, closed the Bundesliga season sitting in a thoroughly respectable 2nd in the table, a full nine points clear of 3rd-place.
Boss Xabi Alonso can therefore depart for Real Madrid with his head held high.
As alluded to above, though, his side’s runners-up finish is not the only reason for the Spanish tactician to be proud of his own efforts over the last couple of seasons.
In addition, as per TNT Sports, having not tasted defeat on the road in the German top-flight since all the way back in the 2022/23 campaign:
‘Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen have made history, setting a new Bundesliga record for the longest unbeaten run away from home.’
