It was a dream night for AC Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu as they ran out 3-1 winners in the Champions League against Real Madrid.

It was three goals and three valuable points for Milan as they ran out deserved winners against Real Madrid. The first goal of the game went to Malick Thiaw as he headed in a Christian Pulisic corner, then Vinicius Junior’s penalty looked to have steadied the ship for the home side.

However, Milan retook the lead not long before half-time when Alvaro Morata pounced on a rebound from a Rafael Leao shot, before Tijjani Reijnders put the seal on the win with his third goal in the competition.

Paulo Fonseca picked out something quite interesting in his post-match comments regarding how open the game was between two sides who want a lot of the ball.

The match stats from the game show that it was indeed very open, with 37 shots in total (23 of them for Real Madrid, 14 for Milan) and 19 of them being shots on target (10 to nine in favour of the home side).

There were also 13 corners with Real again edging the count eight to five, while the combined Expected Goals number was 4.89, almost perfectly split.

Records tumble

Milan ended Real Madrid’s 15-game unbeaten streak at home in the Champions League, a run which stretched back to April 2022 when they lost 3-2 to Chelsea in the second leg of a quarter-final tie (but went through on aggregate anyway).

Milan are the first team to score at least three goals against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu more than once in the European Champions Cup/Champions League, having already done so in October 2009 (3-2).

It was the fifth time Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti had faced his former side Milan since coaching them (2001-2009), and the first time in European competition.

The previous four games all came while in charge of Napoli between 2018 and 2019, with Ancelotti only managing to beat his former side on one occasion (D2 L1).

Milan had only won one of their last seven away games in the Champions League (D3, L3) going into the game, with that one victory coming against Newcastle United in last season’s group stage (2-1).

Individual acclaim

Álvaro Morata has scored seven goals against Real Madrid, more than any other opponent from one of the ‘top five’ European leagues in his career considering all competitions.

The Rossoneri number 7 has scored three goals in three appearances against Real Madrid in the Champions League and against no team has bagged more in the competition (three also against Celtic, Dynamo Kyiv and Ferencvárosi TC).

Tijjani Reijnders has scored four goals in his last three games in all competitions, as many as in his first 60 games for AC Milan combined.

Malick Thiaw scored his first goal with AC Milan during his 60th match for the Rossoneri in all competitions. He is one of three players to have scored a header for AC Milan against Real Madrid in a UCL game, together with Rivaldo and Filippo Inzaghi.
