A new right-back looks to be the agenda for Manchester City but who could it be?

One of the positions that needs strengthening in the Manchester City squad is right-back. With Kyle Walker’s departure and decline as a player Pep Guardiola’s squad does lack a player who is a specialist in the position. Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes currently share duties in the position. Lewis appears destined to play in midfield although he is a quality right-back on his day. Matheus Nunes has played there out of necessity rather than being a specialist right-back.

But the Manchester City squad does need a right-back and two players appear to be City’s primary targets for that role. They are Andrea Cambiaso and Jeremie Frimpong. But which player would be the ideal player for Pep Guardiola’s squad? That depends on the type of player City wants, as they are both vastly different types of players.

Fabrizio Romano has reported via X that Manchester City are keen to sign a right-back in the summer. Furthermore, Romano adds that Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso remains a target for Pep Guardiola’s side. Rudy Galetti has reported for TeamTalk that Jeremie Frimpong has a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ to leave Bayer Leverkusen in the summer for around €40 million. Galetti adds that Liverpool and Manchester City have an interest in signing the Dutch international.

It depends on what Manchester City want or needs as to which player they’ll move for next summer, as Cambiaso and Frimpong both offer something different.

Andrea Cambiaso and Jeremie Frimpong are completely different types of players. In the case of Cambiaso, he is a versatile player who plays either right or left back. He can also play as an inverted full-back with his tremendous technical and tactical ability. On closer inspection, Cambiaso is almost the ideal type of full-back for Pep Guardiola’s style of play. It wouldn’t be a cheap move for City to sign Cambiaso from Juventus. But you can see why Manchester City would be interested in signing the Italian international.

Jeremie Frimpong is a player who thrives going forward. There is almost an argument to be made that he is more of a winger than a right-back. He is a valuable attacking weapon for Xabi Alonso’s side. His delivery and service from out wide is fantastic, and you would think that Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush, for example, would thrive from the quality in the final third that Frimpong would add to Manchester City’s squad. Defensively, Frimpong has his issues. If Manchester City were to move for Frimpong you do sense that Pep Guardiolawouod.hage to be shifting with how he plays his full-backs going forward.

It depends on which type of full-back Manchester City needs, which will dictate who they move for in the summer. Andrea Cambiaso and Jeremie Frimpong appear to be the two players City is monitoring. Both players would add quality to Pep Guardiola’s squad. But in different areas of the pitch. Andrea Cambiaso does appear to tick more of the required boxes for a Manchester City signing than Jeremie Frimpong for now. But City must sign a right-back in the summer so they can avoid playing a makeshift defence in the future like we saw against Real Madrid on Wednesday night. You get the sense that they will it is just a matter of who that will be.
