As the Los Angeles Galaxy's swing out East goes on, they hope that this dreadful start to the season. Their next game is on Wednesday night on the road against the Philadelphia Union.
The defending MLS champions are 0-3-9 after their first 12 games. No team in league history has ever gone winless this deep into the season. CF Montreal avoided this feat by winning last weekend against NYFC.
Match Day #13 brings on another challenge for banged up, revamped roster that Greg Vanney has been trying to squeeze a win out of since late February. Philadelphia is having the type of season in 2025 that the LA Galaxy seems worlds away from.
The 2022 MLS Cup Finals MVP is all too familiar with his next opponent. The LA Galaxy's keeper is hoping for a big turnaround in his hometown after the 7-0 massacre against the New York Red Bulls.
The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native returns to his roots as he is expected to start in goal for the 10th time this season. McCarthy debuted in the league with the Union when he played four seasons with his first MLS team. He appeared in 21 games for Philadelphia.
Last season, McCarthy traded one Los Angeles soccer team for another when he signed with the Galaxy. He spent two seasons with LAFC as they made back-to-back MLS Cup Finals appearances. Only their first showing resulted in a league championship.
McCarthy brought his respected goalkeeping abilities to Carson, California right away. In his first game with the LA Galaxy, his diving save to prevent one the sport's greatest, Lionel Messi, from scoring. His game-altering play preserved the 1-1 draw against Inter Miami at home.
The 32-year-old has not had much from his team. Last in goals scored and most in goals allowed, the Los Angeles Galaxy have a league-worst goal differential of -20 entering Wednesday night.
Philadelphia is near the top the MLS Eastern Conference with a record of 7-2-3. They have scored close to three times as many goals and allowed 16 less as the LA Galaxy.
Being on the field in the City of Brotherly Love optimistically could provide the spark to bring out the best of the six-time champion's goalie. Though it might not be enough to salvage their season, it might be enough to avoid a 13th game this season without a win.
