Manchester United registered a memorable victory over Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup at the Emirates Stadium today.
Bruno Fernandes put United ahead but things went south after Diogo Dalot picked up his second yellow card of the evening.
Gabriel brought Arsenal back with a deflected strike, but the Gunners were wasteful in the final third.
Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir made some big saves, including his fantastic stop to deny Kai Havertz in the penalty shoot-out.
Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer raved about the Turkish international after the game.
He said (via BBC Sport): “Altay Bayindir was absolutely outstanding. He holds his nerve – he doesn’t blink first.
“It was a three-way tie between him and [Matthijs] De Ligt and [Harry] Maguire, who I thought were also superb. But just because of his penalty save, I thought I would give it to him [the man of the match award].
“When you get given an opportunity, you have to take it and he took it today.”
Bayindir endured an unconvincing start to the encounter. His passing was abysmal, completing just 12 of 44 attempts.
His poor ball distribution became a source of frustration for the travelling supporters. Every misplaced ball seemed to add to the tension.
To make his evening worse, Bayindir failed to punch away a cross, which allowed Arsenal to score the equaliser.
It looked like this clash could be his last-ever game in the United shirt.
However, things took a drastic turn when he made a magnificent save after the referee wrongly awarded Arsenal a penalty in the 72nd minute.
Martin Odegaard failed to beat Bayindir and the goalie quickly built on his redemption moment, making an incredible save to deny Declan Rice from point-blank range.
With his confidence growing, Bayindir transformed into the hero for United during the penalty shoot-out.
Havertz had a miserable night and was low on confidence.
The German international struck a low penalty, but Bayindir was equal to the task, diving to keep it out and secure United’s progression.
