Manchester United were beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils struggled to capitalise on their scoring chances against the Cherries. Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made some important saves, but United were also guilty of straying shots off target.
United went into the break with a 1-0 deficit and manager Ruben Amorim decided to change things early with a double substitution in the 54th minute.
Joshua Zirkzee was replaced by Rasmus Hojlund, which was unsurprising. The Dutchman had four successful passes with zero shots on target.
However, the decision to take Manuel Ugarte off for Alejandro Garnacho was surprising.
Garnacho had a good cameo, creating four chances in 35 minutes, but Amorim’s decision to remove Ugarte was a tactical error.
Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo lacked control in midfield with Ugarte’s exit. United conceded the second goal from the penalty spot in the 61st minute.
The Cherries made it 3-0 in their favour two minutes later. Mainoo initially lost possession. It was followed by Fernandes failing to stop Antoine Semenyo in his stride.
Ugarte would have intercepted or at least fouled Semenyo outside the box.
The Uruguayan played only 54 minutes against the Cherries. He still had a good outing, winning 100 percent of his tackles (2/2). He also made four recoveries and won four duels/
He was dribbled past once but made up for it by recovering possession. Ugarte lost the ball just three times and had an 88 percent passing accuracy.
The £42 million-rated star should have played the full 90 minutes. Amorim obviously wanted more in an attacking capacity, but he should have replaced Mainoo.
The United graduate had a good start to the game but tailed off towards the end. The Englishman lost possession on 21 occasions and could not control proceedings.
