Ruben Amorim has insisted it is important that he is brutally honest with his Manchester United squad as the club look to turn around their season.

United were beaten for the sixth time in 12 home Premier League games at the weekend, as Brighton won 3-1 at Old Trafford. After the recent optimism gained from important results at Liverpool and Arsenal, the result – and performance – was a setback for the Red Devils.

It continued a poor record on home soil this season, with Amorim’s side having now lost four of their last five league games in Manchester.

United host Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday night and Amorim admitted ahead of the clash that his team appear ‘really anxious’ in games at Old Trafford.

“We are more nervous playing at home than away because we’ve lost four games in five at home and it is getting harder,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“The first thing in my mind is that we need to score the first goal. If we score the first goal then that will change and we will play better at home.

“I think it is really clear – we are really anxious playing at home and it is getting harder to play at Old Trafford.”

Amorim’s comments come after the 39-year-old declared his team as ‘the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United’ on Sunday. Asked whether his brutal assessment of the side was helpful, he insisted he is keen to avoid delusion around their current performance levels.

“If you want I can be delusional and say different things. I say it as I see it. I said it to the players and I said it to you – I think it’s a good thing to be really honest. If you want me to say different things, I can start to do that because it is easier for me. If you are in the stadium you can feel it but I am not nervous, I am frustrated.”
